The creation of Wine and River Transport Museum (Musee du Vin & de la Batellerie ) tells us about the heritage and history of the Dordogne River that runs through the heart of Bergerac.

The collections on display are made up of a selection of objects, documents and the archives of former boatmen and archaeological sites along the river. There is a new section dedicated to the history of the bridges of Bergerac, from the Middle Ages to the present and, since 2013, a section of the museum has been dedicated to the history of urban development of the city.

2. Maison des Vins (Wine Centre) & Cloitre des Recollets, Bergerac

The Wine Centre (Maison des Vins) is right in the historic heart of Bergerac, in the Récollets Cloisters, a magnificent group of monastic buildings from the 17th-century.

At the Wine Centre you will find all the information you need to explore our vineyards and meet our vintners. A team of professionals is at your disposal to help you plan an unforgettable trip, with exactly what you want from the Bergerac vineyards.

You will also find:

  • An exhibition: “Wine is a journey” which is a fabulous place to start your tour of the Bergerac vineyards. There is an historical fresco from the tertiary era to the present day, the film “Wine is a Journey” and a “senses room”.
  • A wine library or vinothèque where you will find a selection of wines from the Wine Route. You can taste and buy wine and there are lots of wine accessories in our World of Wine store. A games and sensory discovery area is also available for our younger visitors.

Each day from mid-June to mid-September a winemaker will be present to share his profession, his wines and his passion! It’s a great introduction before you head off to visit the vines, cellars and people working in the vineyards.

3. Musee du Tabac, Bergerac

Housed in the Maison Peyrarède, the tobacco museum in Bergerac tells the 4,000 year history of tobacco growth in the region when it used to be a major crop.

Unique in Europe, the collections of the museum tell of the saga of this plant with has an interesting history that originated in America. It has an interesting collection of artefacts, including cigar and cigarette holders, pipes and tobacco jars, but tells also of the history of tobacco use and not just as we know it today.
