Gallo-Roman Villa, Montcaret

Glorious remains of a 4th century Roman villa

Imprint
Updated

The remains have been partly excavated (only about a tenth) and are a magnificent archaeological example.

It must have been grand in its time, as the limited excavations have unearthed thermal baths, a swimming pool covered in mosaics, and a number of huge living rooms with impressive mosaic pavements. This is a real gem and well worth a visit.

Excavations have been carried out between 1922 and 1939 by Jules Formige. Exciting remains from the 1st through to the 5th century have been found, and we know the area was inhabited through medieval times and the middle ages, so it seems that this site has been inhabited throughout our long history.
