Chateau de Bourdeilles, Bourdeilles

Medieval and Renaissance châteaux combined

featured in Sights & sites

This château is the combination of two castles, a medieval one dating to the 13th century and a Renaissance palace dating to the 16th century.

The first traces date back to a fortified town in 1183. For several centuries after that Bourdeilles castle went through many religious and political issues as it was torn between the Crowns of France and England.

The palace houses a prestigious collection of nearly 700 items which include tapestries, statues and furniture. There are great views of the town to be had from the top of the keep.

Visitor comments

  • "Situated in the pretty village of Bourdeilles bordering the River Dronne, this imposing complex consists of a Medieval part and a Renaissance part. Both are open to the public. The buildings are well maintained. The Renaissance part is furnished and decorated in the style of the period. There is a lovely view from the top of the medieval tower over the hills and river." - Trip Advisor
  • "The attraction consists of two castles from different periods which overlook the river. We arrived by car and found ample car parking space at the entrance of the village. This car park was an unsealed car park (on the left as you enter the village). Both castles are in good condition and a relaxing and enjoyable historical attraction. There are opportunities for photographs of the attraction itself, the town countryside and river. Leave at least 2 1/2 hours for the visit and is highly recommended." - Trip Advisor
