Grotte de Tourtoirac Cave, Tourtoirac

Excellent rock formations in these underground caves

featured in Sights & sites

Only discovered in 1995, by the caver Jean-Luc Sirieix, these caves have some impressive stalactites and stalagmites along its tunnels over 20 metres below the surface.

The project to open the caves as a museum has focused on protecting the natural environment and on making the caves accessible to all. The guided tour of the caves takes around one hour and it is possible to pre-book a tour in your own language. The temperature underground remains a constant 13 degrees centigrade so remember a jumper!

Worth knowing

This is one of the few caves that is accessible to those of reduced mobility. there is wheelchair and pushchair access to the whole site.

Visitor comments

  • "This is a really well organised site. There is an escalator which caters to people of any health level, and the walkways are designed to cater to wheelchairs. There are exquisite stalactites and stalagmites, differing formations and a great layout. Staff provide a quality commentary and know what they are talking about." - Trip Advisor
  • "They've done a really good job with the Grotte - it is well worth a visit particularly on a rainy day or on an especially hot afternoon when being in the cool underground is a good thing! They offer guided tours in most languages and it is important to book ahead for the guided tour in the language of your choice. we have now visited 3 times, twice with young children (5, 8 and 13) all of whom enjoyed it as did the adults - highly recommend." - Trip Advisor
  • "I'm not a cave visitor, my partner is, so we visited this attraction. Oh my goodness me! I'm so very glad that we did." - Trip Advisor
