Maison Forte de Reignac, Tursac

Grand troglodyte house decorated in medieval fashion

featured in Sights & sites

This is an impressive honey-stoned troglodyte house built within large cave shelters. Its relatively modest exterior disguises the space within, which is decorated in a grand style, with original medieval furniture and tapestries.

Its front was built in the 14th century but its windows were not put in until the 16th century. It served as a strong fortification against attack. It also houses a well-known exhibition on the history of torture, with examples of instruments.

Worth knowing

This attraction is part of the 'Pass Decouverte' which offers you a discount once you have visited two or more of the attractions listed in the booklet.

Watch out for

Access for people with reduced mobility will be difficult here are there are many sets of stairs and the ground, both on the stairs and on the flat, is decidedly uneven.

Who should go

This unusual sight offers a great visit for all the family. But be aware that the torture exhibition may not be suitable for young children or those of a nervous disposition...

Visitor comments

  • "This is an extraordinary visit to a house built into the cliffs for defence allowing us to experience life in the medieval period along the Vezère River. One of the most unusual sites to visit highly recommend." - Trip Advisor
  • "This is a gem of a visit. The house is amazing, built into the mountainside and over 700 years old. There are a lot of stairs so a bit of exercise for all! If the execution for torture is on, do NOT take children in, it is very interesting but not for the kiddies." - Trip Advisor
  • "A really unusual place to visit, a big posh house with a back wall of greenish cliff face! The guidebook was informative and its is furnished with period pieces. All the different levels and viewing points at the top are great although a bit vertiginous!" - Trip Advisor
