Eglise Saint-Sperie Church, Saint-Cere

Romanesque church in the heart of the town of Saint-Céré

featured in Sights & sites

A catholic church that originates from the 10th or 11th centuries and was once said to contain the remains of the Sainte Spérie.

The church Sainte-Spérie was partially destroyed during the Wars of Religion, and was subsequently rebuilt. The interior is composed of a wide nave and marble altarpiece from the seventeenth century, a beautiful arch platform supported by the elegant curve. More modern chapels complete the interior decoration.

The bell tower was built between 1756 and 1760 with stones from the demolition of the old ramparts. The building was registered under the historical monuments act on the 23rd April 1979.

On the Place de l'Eglise you can see the Hotel de Puymule, a building that has survived from the 15th century.

Worth knowing

The windows tell the legend of St. Spérie and were created at the beginning of 20th century. They are the work of the Toulouse workshop of Louis Victor Gesta.
